Rapid gas decompression is also known as explosive decompression, for obvious reasons. It is the process where gas is initially absorbed into a soft part, in this case rubber at high-pressures and then allowed to quickly expand due to a fast reduction in pressure.

 

 

 

This fast pressure reduction causes the gas volume to rapidly increase while still inside the rubber seal. Elastomeric rubber seals are susceptible to damage associated with rapid gas (explosive) decompression events in service where pressurized gas is present. Performance generalizations are difficult because so many variables determine the RGD/ED resistance of a given elastomer such as: Modulus, Tear strength but also seal section and groove fill ratio, temperature, pressure, decompression rate and No. of cycles. In addition, moulding and the subsequent processes have a big impact on the seals quality. Here we see the core competences of GITIS in combination with the compound as the winning element.
