The food and beverage processing including drinking water treatment market requires rubber products, which are compliant to the various regulatory institutions like FDA, NSF, USP, KTW, 3-A and WRAS. Compound technologies need to be chemically resistant for use with aggressive media seen in Clean in Place (CIP) and Steam in Place (SIP) practices and high temperature steam sterilization.

 

 

FDA (Food Grade) O-Rings, rubber sealing and sanitary seals are commonly used in applications where food or beverages are present, such as in food, beverage and dairy processing and machineries. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established a list of rubber compounding ingredients, which tests have indicated are neither toxic nor carcinogenic. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to compound food grade materials from the FDA list of ingredients and establish whether they pass the necessary extraction requirements. Additional requirements have been imposed upon seal manufacturers regarding food and beverage service (NSF).

The U.S. Pharmacopoeia (USP) Class VI outlines requirements for medical grade compounds. The USP Class VI compounds must be made from ingredients with clear histories of biocompatibility.

KTW, 3-A and WRAS are related instead to drinking water applications and based on different institutes and their norms.
